[if not null]

dual channel digital video installation
by Wobbe F. Koning

Working with digital media, the notion of NULL and not NULL (or "!NULL") was used as a starting point for a video project about existentialist issues. The resulting piece is a visualization on two large adjacent screens, a dual channel video work, with a total running time of 12 minutes.

Two actors perform fragments of philosophy as a coherent dialogue where no questions are answered. This live action video is combined with computer graphics sequences that comment on the live action, and provide contrast by complementing and juxtaposing it. The perspective on reality and its representation, is constantly shifting.

In the Hopkins Hall Gallery, a viewing space will be constructed. All extraneous light will be blocked out. In an effort to get the viewer fully engulfed in the work, the two video screens will appear to be floating in nothingness (to use McLuhan's terminology: a hot experience is created). This is the first fully digital video work to be produced at the Ohio State University. The work was shot and edited using of the new DV (Digital Video) technology, and will be presented from two synchronized DVD (Digital Video Disk) players. The video signals do not leave the digital realm until the images are projected upon the screens.

The aim of Wobbe F. Koning's studies in "Art and Technology", was to explore the possibilities of enhancing visual narrative expression with the use of computer graphics. During this MFA thesis show in Hopkins Hall you will see the results of his three year stay at ACCAD (the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design). Next to the installation piece "if(!NULL){", a monitor will show the previous video works:
